The truck slowed down before it came to a stop in front of the gate. Pancho cut the engine. We sat in silence, listening and watching the buildings at the end of the driveway. Just as I was about to say something, Pancho looked at me, reached under his seat, and drew a large silver pistola.

Waving it above my lap, he said, “Stay here. If someone approaches… handle it.”

“What do you mean, handle it?”

He gestured again. The pistola wagged over my lap like the tail of a chihuahua.

I reluctantly gripped the pistola, never taking my eyes off it.

“I mean, you will know what to do.”

I will know what to do?

It was heavier than it looked but balanced perfectly in my hand.

Pancho looked at Claudia. “Claudia, vámonos.”

Both doors opened. Claudia and Pancho quietly got out and walked to the gate. Pancho worked the latch until it opened.

“I’m not going to wait in the truck,” I said to myself as I slid out, watching the dust trace their footsteps down the driveway.

Okay, I have a pistola but no sombrero. Think. How is this getting you any closer to Santa Cruz, Pip?

Before I had time to answer my own question, I heard another truck approaching and tightened my grip on the pistola.

As the truck crept to a stop, I looked at the driver and immediately recognized him.

It was Carlos.

He stepped out of the truck with a suspicious grin. “Hola, Pip. What are you doing here and why are you carrying a pistola, amigo? Is everything okay?”

We stood eye to eye.

“Pancho told me to wait here. I see you have one too. Hey, how about some target practice?”

Carlos’s suspicious grin turned genuine. “Do you even know how to use that thing?”

Without hesitating, I raised the gun and took aim at a cactus.

Direct hit.

“Haha, not bad, amigo. Here, let me show you.”

Carlos fired off six shots and cut the cactus perfectly in half.

The suspicious grin returned, more suspicion than grin this time.

“Now tell me, what are you doing here?”

There was no longer any trace of a grin.

“Well, you see…”

We were delightfully interrupted by the sound boots scuffing along the driveway.

A truck rattled down the dirt driveway and skidded to a halt. Claudia was up and out before the fork reached my mouth.

“Pip, let’s go. Pancho está aquí. Get in the truck.”

One last bite.

“Gracias, Luisa. Time to go.”

Claudia held the truck door open so I could slide in.

The gear shift between my legs, a hazard.

“Pip, ¿cómo estás?”

“Hola, Pancho.”

Claudia climbed up and shut the door.

The truck was a burrito. I was the beans. Claudia and Pancho, the tortilla.

“Hola, Claudia. If it wasn’t for your father, Eduardo would be on his own this time. Ignacio was a great man.”

“Sí. Ese idiota de Pedro siempre lo mete en problemas. Esta vez, Carlos lo quiere muerto.”

“Sí. Carlos is done messing around.”

MUERTOS? Día de los Muertos? Day of the Dead.

My head swiveled between Claudia and Pancho until my gaze drifted down to the pistola on Pancho’s hip.

“Amigo, did you think it was an ornament? “Aquí, the coffee business es cosa seria.”

Claudia took no notice and continued.

“If only Eduardo would take that job for Driza, help Mama… and stop following Pedro around.”

Bouncing back and forth between Claudia and Pancho as the truck ground the dirt road into a fine powder, I sang quietly to myself.

“Got the feeling I just can’t lose, pulling into Santa Cruz.”

“Pip! Wake up! Wake up! The truck is gone. Eduardo is gone!”

I rubbed my eyes and, without thinking, “I thought the truck didn’t work.”

I probably should not have said that.

Claudia unleashed something in Spanish as I sat up.

“¡¿Qué te pasa?! ¡Siempre con las bromas! ¡Despierta, Pip!”

She stopped herself and sighed.

For a split second I think we shared a smile but it’s too early in the morning to know for sure.

“The truck isn’t broken.” She looked out toward the fields. “It’s Eduardo who’s broken.”

“¡Ándale!, Pip. Get dressed. Luisa is making breakfast and Pancho is on his way.”

“Pancho is coming here?”

She was already gone.

“I guess I’ll just talk to myself then,” and got dressed.

“I wonder if you’re ever going to get back to Santa Cruz, Pip? What do you think?”

I shrugged and ruminated on breakfast.

“¡Vamos!”

“Buenos días, Luisa. What’s for breakfast?” I asked, sitting down at the table.

“Era el favorito de Papá. Huevos rancheros. You might need the energy today.”

What requires more exertion than a short ten-mile walk to the cafe? I wondered.

My fork snapped through the crisp tortilla.

I could see his eyes just beneath the brim of his hat and immediately realized today was not the day I would earn my sombrero.

I pulled on the gear shift and pushed it into park.

For what felt like an entire California growing season, I walked over to Pancho.

“Amigo, what took so long? I told you to come straight here. The instructions were simple. How is it possible someone could be so...”

“Go do something you can actually handle. Cómo es posible? … Andale. Inside.”

That went well.

The phone started ringing.

Claudia, not far behind, walked over to Pancho.

“Hola Pancho.”

Pancho leaned into the truck to inspect the bags.

“Bueno, Claudia. Y Luisa? Como esta?”

“Bueno, Pancho. Bueno. Luisa is coping but Eduardo is still Eduardo. I won’t let you down.” She smiled “Guadalajara is beautiful. Everything is in order.”

“I understand. Carlos should be here shortly. Wait with the truck.”

Pancho walked into the room.

“Si, Thank you Carlos. We just arrived.” I hung up the phone.

“Amigo, you did a good job. It wasn’t an easy assignment. Next time come straight back. Claudia is… how do you say…de armas tomar.” Pancho grinned. “Can you call Carlos back and tell him that we await his arrival.”

“Sí… entiendo. Gracias.”

The People v. Common Sense

OPINION

Courts exist to resolve disputes, not to perpetuate them. When a controversy has been reduced to a single identifiable question, the law generally favors answering that question rather than obscuring it beneath procedure, terminology, or institutional ambiguity. The doctrines discussed herein arise from that fundamental principle and reflect the judiciary’s longstanding preference for substance over form, clarity over verbosity, and resolution over avoidance.

This case presents no novel question of constitutional law, statutory interpretation, procedure, or public policy. Rather, it concerns a more familiar phenomenon: the migration of a simple question through an increasingly complex system. As responsibility passes from person to person, department to department, and entity to entity, the answer remains elusive while the question remains unchanged. The Court therefore begins where the parties should have begun: with the answer rather than the question itself.

The Two-Word Sentence Doctrine

Nothing in California law establishes a minimum word requirement for a legally cognizable proposition. Courts evaluate substance, not syllable count. (Code Civ. Proc., § 452; MIP Holdings, Inc. v. The System (1962) 137 Cal.App.5th 13–17 [6th Dist.].)

The purpose of language is communication. Where a statement successfully conveys the material issue in dispute, additional words may improve style but do not necessarily improve meaning.

The Court therefore adopts the Two-Word Sentence Doctrine, which provides:

A proposition expressed in two words is legally sufficient when those two words identify the controlling issue more efficiently than a longer explanation.

Examples include:

State grounds.

Nonperformance continues.

Show authority.

Produce records.

In each instance, the listener immediately understands the issue requiring resolution.

The Court further observes that excessive verbiage may obscure issues that are otherwise straightforward. A concise statement that accurately identifies the dispute is entitled to the same consideration as a lengthy memorandum. The law rewards clarity, not word count.

The doctrine further establishes that where a petitioner or plaintiff constructs substantive argument around two, consecutive, two-word sentences, the Court shall proceed to proceed, forthwith.

The Good Enough Doctrine

The Court also rejects the proposition that a litigant must present a flawless theory at the pleading stage.

California follows a policy of liberal construction. (Code Civ. Proc., § 452.) The relevant inquiry is whether the pleading gives fair notice of the claim and alleges facts sufficient to support relief if proven. (PIP G. Enterprises v. The System (1972) 211 Cal.App.5th 43, 47 [6th Dist.].)

Accordingly, the Court recognizes the Good Enough Doctrine:

A pleading is good enough when the Court understands the claim, the respondent or defendant understands the claim, and the law provides a remedy if the alleged facts are true.

The Do-What-You-Don’t-Want-To-Do Doctrine

For centuries, functioning legal systems have depended upon individuals performing acts they would prefer not to perform. Witnesses testify. Parties produce documents. Lawyers answer discovery. Judges read filings. Citizens serve on juries. Clerks lodge documents. (Richard Industries Ltd. v. The System (1999) 1511 Cal.App.5th 1, 31, 37 [6th Dist.].)

The administration of justice would collapse if legal obligations were conditioned upon personal enthusiasm.

Accordingly, the Court recognizes the Do-What-You-Don’t-Want-To-Do Doctrine, a principle so fundamental that it rarely requires express articulation:

When the law imposes a duty, the burdened party must perform that duty notwithstanding a preference not to do so.

The doctrine is routinely observed in daily legal practice.

The You-Know-What-Goes-Here Doctrine

The Court recognizes that there comes a point in certain disputes where the controlling issue has been identified so many times, from so many angles, that repetition ceases to add analytical value. (Contextually Oblivious LLP. v. The System (2008) 67, 71 Cal.App.5th 23, 29 [6th Dist.].)

Accordingly, the Court adopts the You-Know-What-Goes-Here Doctrine:

Where the parties, the Court, and the record all understand the unresolved question, a litigant may refer to that question indirectly without loss of meaning.

The doctrine applies only where the omitted proposition is obvious from the context of the proceedings.

CONCLUSION

Utilizing the aforementioned doctrines: The Court has reviewed the briefs, the declarations, the exhibits, the objections, the demurrers, the correspondence, the supplemental correspondence, the supplemental supplemental correspondence, the correspondence concerning the supplemental correspondence and the 479 page memorandum of points and authorities.

The controlling issue remains unchanged.

State grounds.

Respondent either can or cannot.

If it can, it shall.

If it cannot, it shall explain why.

The law requires an answer.

DISPOSITION

The demurrer is overruled.

Respondent is hereby directed to provide a verified answer under penalty of perjury.

Before I got the truck in gear.

“Mira, Pip, es que Eduardo siempre es igual. Siempre. Dice que va a trabajar, que va a ahorrar dinero, que ahora sí va a hacer las cosas bien. Pero cuando Driza le ofrece trabajo, dice que no. Después desaparece tres días porque Pedro lo llamó para ayudar con unas vacas, unas cajas, unas llantas o quién sabe qué.”

Focus.

“Pedro tampoco ayuda. Pedro tiene una idea nueva cada semana. Un día quiere entrenar burros. Otro día quiere sembrar café. Después quiere comprar una camioneta vieja y arreglarla. Después quiere ir a Estados Unidos. Después quiere regresar. Después quiere abrir un negocio. Siempre hay un plan, pero nunca hay dinero.”

Focus on the road.

I sat on the tailgate waiting for Claudia and noticed an officious sign hanging from a fence post adjacent to the field: “Driza, S.A. de C.V. – No Trespassing.”

A pair of boots kicking up dust coming down the driveway caught my attention.

“Hahaha, amigo, buenos días.“

Pedro leaned into the truck. “A friend of yours, Eduardo?”

It wasn’t even noon, but apparently the party had already begun.

“I’m Pip.”

“Sí, what are you doing out here all alone?”

Noticing the bags, he poked one with his hand.

“What do we have here, Pip?”

I stood up and moved between him and the bags.

“Bags.”

“Bags of what, amigo? Eduardo, can you believe this? We have a pair of bags.”

Eduardo stood silently.

“Just bags. You know, the kind of bags that carry stuff. Beautiful day, huh? I am just waiting on Claudia, admiring the fields. What do you grow out here? If this was Santa Cruz, rows of strawberries.”

The screen door squeaked open.

Eduardo came alive just as Claudia walked onto the porch.

“They just planted maize.”

Claudia gave a stern look to Pedro for a brief moment and then turned her attention to Eduardo.

“Where have you been? ¿Trabajo?”

“¿Trabajo? Sí. I was making arrangements.”

“¿Arreglos para conseguir trabajo?”

“Pip, it’s time to go. Pancho is waiting.”

Luisa came out onto the porch and yelled something in Spanish that I understood to mean get the hell out of here. Pedro and Eduardo immediately started kicking up more dust as they walked down the driveway.

I looked at the truck, closed the tailgate and climbed in as Claudia got in on the other side.

The truck shook as we both sat down.

Here we go again.

Maybe I should have fixed the shocks while I was waiting.

KARL Hey Adam.

KARL Sure.

ADAM You know the rules.

(A brief passage of time)

ADAM Final frame.

(ADAM bowls a spare. KARL follows and bowls a spare.)

ADAM A tie.

KARL Temporary equilibrium.

ADAM Can’t you just say we played well?

KARL History rarely ends in a draw.

ADAM Bowling occasionally does.

(They both look over toward the adjacent children’s lanes. A parent is struggling to explain the game to a young child whose ball keeps drifting into the gutter.)

ADAM Bumpers?

KARL Bumpers.

(Together, ADAM and KARL walk over to the child’s lane and manually lift the guard rails into place.)

ADAM Eventually they come down.

KARL Eventually.

ADAM Otherwise they never learn the game.

KARL Otherwise they never stay in it long enough to learn.

(They watch as the child rolls the ball. It bounces off both bumpers, wanders down the center toward the pins, and knocks down three.)

ADAM Progress.

KARL Participation.

ADAM We’ll call it a tie.

KARL For now.

END OF PLAY

I didn’t notice it so much on the way to the mercado, but the truck is a bumpy ride.

“Take a right.”

“No, the café is this way.”

“Go right at the next intersection.”

“But that won’t take us to the coffee shop. Pancho is expecting us. He told me to bring you directly to the café.”

The look.

Sometimes words aren’t necessary.

I took a right.

The truck kicked up so much dust at that intersection that the cloud was visible from Santa Cruz.

“Luisa will be happy to see you.”

“Sí.”

We rode in silence for the rest of the ride as the truck trailed a plume of dust.

Before I got a chance to put the truck into park, Claudia was halfway to the door. She stopped and turned around.

“You’re welcome to join us, Pip.”

“And the bags? Pancho?”

Luisa opened the screen door and walked out to greet Claudia.

“Mama!”

They embraced as Luisa looked past me, to the fields, smiling.

Inside, at the kitchen table, worn through generations, Luisa had prepared plates of empanadas and elote.

“Mama makes the best empanadas. ¿Y Eduardo?”

“Si no está en la hamaca, anda por ahí con Pedro y esos muchachos.”

“Pip, go keep an eye on the truck.”

My self-imposed obligation to periodically contribute awkwardly to the conversation had been suspended. Squished? Who uses that word?

The truck, a sanctuary. Temporarily.

“Eduardo, wake up. I am taking the truck. Pancho asked me to pick up Claudia. He told me to park next to the small church near the mercado”

“Bueno, mamá estará contenta.”

The hammock barely moved.

The truck started up without a problem. Follow the dirt road towards the cafe. Left at the intersection to the church. No problemo!

There.

Maybe that’s her.

“Are you Claudia? Pancho sent me.”

She looked me over.

“What do they call you?”

“They call me Pip.”

“What kind of name is Pip?”

“It’s what, uhm…are you sure you’re Eduardo’s sister?”

She was taller than expected.

“Are you sure you’re Pip?”

“I, I, I…yeah. I think so.”

This isn’t going well.

“Your bags are small for straw hats. And heavy.”

Yep, making it worse.

“Don’t touch that one.” She pointed. “You can take the other two and put them in the back of the truck.”

“They are straw hats. You know, the kind fishermen wear. Farm workers. These will eventually find their way to San Diego.”

Searching for something to say. Anything.

“Uhm, they must be squished to fit in these small bags.”

No. Not that.

Claudia smiled.

“It’s the raw materials.”

“Oh.”

“Yeah.”

“Absolutely.”

“That makes complete sense.”

“Definitely.”

“The truck is this way.”

Claudia looked at me. “You mean this truck right here that we are standing next to?”

I looked at the truck I was leaning against and loaded the bags.

“Yes.”

“Let’s get out of here. Pancho is waiting.”

The La Paz Journals - Next Episode

Santa Cruz is feeling farther away, and it’s clear, Eduardo is not the solution. Pancho is the way home.

“Luisa, have you seen Eduardo?”

“Cómo que no está en la hamaca?”

“Pancho asked me to pick up Claudia in the truck.”

“Ah, Claudia! Qué bueno. Qué bueno.”

Luisa walked over, pulled out the chair and hugged me before I could sit down.

“What’s for dinner?”

“Preparé una sopa especial. Menudo.”

“I thought Menudo was an ‘80s band.”

The screen door squeaked open. Eduardo stepped through and sat down.

“Luisa, this soup is delicious.”

Eduardo sat quietly. We didn’t speak. He just finished his soup and left.

“Thank you very much,” I said, gathering the dishes. “Here, let me help.”

I looked out the window towards the fields.

“You know, we have fields, the ocean, coffee shops, horses, warm days, and cool nights in Santa Cruz too. We grow strawberries, artichokes, Brussels sprouts, blackberries, and raspberries. All kinds of produce.”

“Sí?”

“Sí.”

“I need to get home. I have a date.”

“Con una chica?”

“No. With bureaucracy.”

Luisa laughed.

The heat of the day gave way.

It’s time to rest.

Claudia arrives tomorrow.

I overheard Pancho on the phone talking to Claudia. I think she might be Eduardo’s sister who makes straw hats.

My ball cap provides adequate protection from the sun, but I now understand the appeal of a large-brim.

“Amigo, Claudia is bringing a shipment of straw hats from Guadalajara, and I need you to make sure she gets here okay. Those hats are extremely important for our business.”

“What do you need me to do, Pancho?”

“You can take the truck. Claudia isn’t fond of horses, and you’ll need it to bring me the hats.”

“But Eduardo said the truck was non-operational.”

Pancho grinned.

“The truck is fine, amigo.”

“If you can do this for me, the horse is yours.”

“But Eduardo…”

“Don’t worry about what Eduardo says. You listen to me now.”

“I could really use one of those hats. The sun is daunting.”

Pancho smiled.

“Hats aren’t given, amigo. They are earned. Get back to work.”

Phone rings.

“Bueno! Café La Paz. How may I help you?”

Transport back to Santa Cruz is proving difficult, but the ten-mile trek to the coffee shop is paying off. Pancho and I are becoming good friends.

Luisa’s cooking has created a serious logistical problem, Eduardo.

He is dividing his time equally between Luisa’s empanadas and hammock siestas, but claims the truck is non-operational. I suspect the truck is fine. It’s Eduardo who isn’t functioning.

Fortunately, the empanadas provide the necessary calories for the daily commute.

The ten miles are quotidian now. I don’t need the donkeys. Pancho, the purveyor of the coffee shop, has promised me a horse.

He is a real character. Straight out of the movies. Cowboy boots, cowboy hat, and a pistola holstered to his hip.

We get along great. In fact, he offered me a job answering the phone and taught me rudimentary coffee shop Spanish.

“Seis mil dólares por kilo, FOB La Paz.”

“Doce mil dólares por kilo, CIF San Diego.”

My coffee shop Spanish is bueno!

The phone rings constantly.

I have yet to meet any of the customers. Only Carlos. He comes by once a week to pick up bricks of coffee.

That’s about it.

If I can somehow get a ride to San Diego, I’m basically home.

Eduardo’s sister arrives from Guadalajara next week. Perhaps her presence will disrupt his hammock-ridden state.

I have to go.

The phone is ringing.

Eduardo’s mother is a very good cook.

Too good, in fact.

I have just awakened from a deep empanada-induced food coma with an epiphany.

Fleeing Santa Cruz for Mexico was not rational.

I think I conflated feelings with facts and reacted emotionally.

The guys at the lumber yard made it sound like fun: riding in the back of a pickup truck using garbage bags full of leaves as both cushions and covers, crossing the border at Tijuana or Tecate, maybe spending the night in Ensenada, going fishing.

Who could say no to that?

I have now realized I wasn’t fleeing because I had to. I was fleeing from the anxiety of the uncertainty.

An adventure sounded a lot better than sticking around.

I must return to Santa Cruz.

Eduardo’s mom is yelling something in Spanish. Pretty sure it is directed at Eduardo.

“Ahorita! Ahorita!” she keeps repeating.

I must go now.

The Court denied my Petition for Writ of Halibut.

As a consequence, I remain without halibut.

This development has created significant practical difficulties. Fish remains expensive and my financial condition continues to deteriorate. The Court offered no alternative source of protein and declined to address the broader implications of its ruling.

Seeking guidance, I consulted Archimedes.

After reviewing the matter, Archimedes concluded that my difficulties stemmed not from the denial of the petition itself, but from a lack of gainful employment.

His recommendation was direct.

“Go stand outside the lumber yard.”

Accordingly, I took his advice and am currently standing outside of a lumber yard in Capitola. Jose, Juan and Hector have advised me of the presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and that Canadian nationals are of particular interest to the authorities. They muttered something in Spanish but I understood the word “Trudeau” and have been advised to flee immediately.

Eduardo arrived in a truck with three nearly flat tires and is taking all of us to Mexico for safe harbor. He informed me that his mother’s home in La Paz is a short 10-mile walk to the nearest coffee shop that will have internet. I can file documents from there.

On Wednesdays and Sundays, the donkeys are available for transport. They should mitigate the wear and tear on our joints from excessive walking.

I am concerned about sun exposure, but Juan insists I need not worry because his sister makes straw hats.

I am learning that lying flat on the bed of the truck accomplishes two things at the same time. We remain out of the wind and out of sight.

OPINION OF THE COURT

Petitioner comes before this Court seeking extraordinary relief, specifically, the immediate production of one (1) legal-sized flatfish (Paralichthys californicus) or, in the alternative, the release of a 2 oz lure currently held in the custody of a submerged reef structure within the jurisdiction of Monterey Bay.

The Court, having reviewed the petition and being well-versed in the ancient laws of the sea, finds as follows:

1. Regarding the Writ of Halibut

The Court recognizes the Petitioner’s dedication and acknowledges the inherent emotional distress of drifting for hours without a bump. However, the production of a legal flatfish requires the Petitioner to meet a strict burden of proof, which includes, but is not limited to:

Demonstrating the deployment of high-quality bait (e.g., lively anchovies, squid, or well-presented swimbaits).

Navigating the sandy drop-offs with sufficient skill to bounce the bottom without dredging it.

Satisfying the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s strict statutory requirements regarding minimum length.

The Court finds that Monterey Bay does not issue flatfish on demand. The ocean operates on its own schedule, governed by the tides, the baitfish, and profound indifference to the hopes of humans.

2. Regarding the Detained 2 oz Lure

In the alternative, Petitioner demands the return of a 2 oz lure “presently detained by reef structure.”

Under the established maritime doctrine of Lex Snaggus (the Law of the Snag), any tackle that makes physical contact with, and is subsequently held by, a reef, kelp stalk, or submerged shopping cart immediately becomes the legal property of the ocean. The reef structure claims sovereign immunity against all actions for replevin.

Furthermore, the local Lingcod and Cabezon populations have already filed a secondary claim on the lure, incorporating it into their underwater modern art installation.

ORDER

IT IS HEREBY ORDERED that the Petition for Writ of Halibut is DENIED without prejudice. Petitioner may refile the request on the water at a later time, provided they bring fresh bait and a measure of patience.

IT IS FURTHER ORDERED that the request for the return of the 2 oz lure is DENIED with prejudice. The tackle is remanded to the permanent custody of the reef. The Petitioner is advised to tie on a new leader, check their drag, and cast again.

IT IS SO ORDERED.

It was a late-summer afternoon outside the elementary school. A boy played alone on the monkey bars.

He hung from the steel with one arm, then swung the other up to catch the next bar. Arm under arm in perfect rhythm, effortlessly reaching the other side. A perfect dismount.

Another boy played in the sand. He scooped sand into a mound and dug a hole. He quietly watched as the first boy effortlessly crossed the bars again and again.

Bored and curious, he walked over.

“Do you mind if I try?”

“You’ll have to wait,” the boy said. “I need to get this right.”

“It looks like you’re doing it perfectly. You’ve gone back and forth at least ten times without slipping.”

“The trick is to get your hands and your body into precise alignment. Then it takes no effort at all. I’m still practicing. Here, watch.”

The boy swung across the bars with precision, reached the end, and turned back without pausing.

“Okay,” he said, dropping down. “That’s how you do it. You can try now.”

The other boy gripped the bars and pulled himself forward, but halfway across his arms gave out and he dropped into the dirt.

“Let me try again.”

“No. It’s my turn now.”

“But you already went ten times.”

“You fell off. You have to make it to go again.”

The boy stepped back, a little disgruntled, and watched him glide across the bars another ten times, flawless as ever.

When he jumped down, he shook his head.

“Not even close to right!”

“It looked good to me.”

“Go ahead.”

The boy jumped up again. This time he made it a little farther before falling.

“Can you spot me?”

“I can’t. That’s not how it’s played.”

“Okay… I’ll go again.”

“Nope. My turn. You fell off.”

Again, the boy crossed the bars. Back and forth. Back and forth. Ten more times.

“NOT EVEN CLOSE!” he shouted.

The other boy stared at him.

“What are you talking about? You made it every time. You’re really good at it.”

The boy shook his head.

“Okay. My turn.”

“No,” he said. “I have to get this right.”

Another flawless traverse.

“Now. Watch this,” he added. “You let the momentum of your legs carry you forward.”

“I think I got it.”

The boy jumped up again. This time he moved with rhythm, bar to bar, clean and controlled until he reached the other side.

He hung there for a moment, surprised.

“I made it.”

“Not bad,” the boy said. “But it’s my turn now.”

“But I made it.”

“You only made it halfway. You have to make it back before you can go again.”

The boy dropped down.

The other boy went again.

Back and forth.
Back and forth.
Twenty times.

Effortless.

“NO GOOD!”

The boy looked up at him.

“That was amazing. You went back and forth twenty times.”

The boy shook his head.

“That wasn’t perfect.”

The boy responded.

“Maybe perfection doesn’t exist.”

Morgan:

Hey Posty.

Posty:

Yo, what’s up Morgan.

Morgan:

Nice car.

Posty:

Yo, thanks bro. What kind of truck is that?

Morgan:

Old Chevy. Just picked it up on Craigslist.

Posty:

Dope. How are things with you?

Morgan:

Little crazy. This world is insane. Need to find me a cute girl.

Posty:

Yeah, me too. Feeling a little Whitney.

Morgan:

Hold on a sec. I gotta get all this sand out of my boots.

Posty:

What did you get up to last night?

Morgan:

Met this girl at the bar. We drank whiskey and ended up on the beach.

What about you?

Posty:

House party. Allen Iverson and Tony Romo showed up in a G-Wagon full of soccer moms. It got wild.

Morgan:

Cool, How much did you pay for that Bentley?

Posty:

Three hundred thousand out the door.

Do you like my grill?

Morgan:

I paid two thousand for this Silverado.

It came with a grill. Might go tailgating.

Posty:

Bentley’s got heated seats.

Morgan:

Chevy’s got a bench seat.

Maybe we should write a song.

A glass bowl filled with water sat atop the kitchen counter. Across the aisle, a gas flame flickered beneath a steel pot.

“It’s warming up in here,” said the lobster.

The goldfish swam an effortless lap, his eyes fixed on the pot.

“Hey. Is there anyone there?”

The goldfish stopped and glared indignantly.

“Oh, hi. I have so much to do.” He swam on.

“This water is warming up, but it feels kind of nice… like, what?” the lobster asked, genuinely curious.

“I’m writing a book, filing a lawsuit, starting a podcast, and painting a masterpiece.” Another lap.

“My shell is starting to change color.”

“The book could be about how to get things done.”

“It’s getting really warm in here.”

“Pastels are the better choice. Oils are too much work.” The goldfish blew a trail of bubbles and kept swimming.

“Whoa, the water is getting a little uncomfortable. Can you help me?”

“Maybe we can start a podcast. What do you think?”

“Ouch! It’s heating up.”

“This bowl is too small, I’m going to sue.”

“It’s hot in here!”

The goldfish kept swimming.

“I THINK I AM COOKING!”

“Yes, that’s a great idea. A cookbook.

I’m sorry.

Too busy. Can’t talk.”
